Book Review: So Long, Insecurity Leader's Guide

So Long, Insecurity Group Experience Leader's Guide
So Long, Insecurity Group Experience Leader Guide
By Beth Moore
Tyndale House, 2011
English, 128 pgs

Description:
Building upon the message of the bestselling book, So Long, Insecurity, the So Long, Insecurity Group Experience will be an important tool for small groups, Bible studies, and book clubs to use as they dig even deeper into what it means to be truly secure. Designed to bring women together in a community of support, the Group Experience provides an in-depth look at what the Bible has to say about image, society, relationships, and our innate longing for soul-deep security. The So Long, Insecurity Group Experience will take readers on a journey deep into God’s Word and encourage them to work through their struggles with insecurity together while growing in knowledge of the only One who can provide lasting security.

Review:
I want to preface this by saying that I have not read the book that this study is based on. I have been attending a women's study for a few years now and a few of the books we have used have been by Beth Moore. I've been floored by her in every way! She is an amazing speaker and writer and just has a way of getting into your hearts.

This study is intended to have 10 sessions. She has some really great tips in the front for the leader of the group. She even explains how to do the timing for the sessions. Most important is that she has tips on how to deal with the tone of the sessions. They get pretty deep and they're dealing with a sensitive topic for most people.

It would be prudent for anyone attending the study to have a copy of the book, as well as the participant guide. A lot of the sessions refer to the book and I can imagine it would be frustrating to not have it handy to see what she's discussing.

Each session has "A Word from Beth" for the leader to read out loud to the participants. Then you dig in! There are lots of group discussion questions and lots of "look it up" questions referring to Scriptures. Then, of course, it's Beth Moore, so there is a homework section too!

I'm really hoping this will be what we use for our Fall study. I can't imagine a topic more relevant. It even goes along with some other books I've read recently.

I received a copy of the book for the purpose of a review. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review.

Product Review: YoCrunch Greek Yogurt

YoCrunch has introduced the first Greek yogurt with convenient mix in granola topping attached. With 11 grams of protein and a sweeter flavor, YoCrunch’s Greek Yogurt is a value that’s available in four flavors: Strawberry, Blueberry, Peach and Honey.

It’s the perfect choice for moms and kids who want the extra health benefits of Greek, without the tang that many yogurt fans don’t enjoy. It has 3 to 6 grams more protein than traditional yogurt!

You can print a coupon good for $1 off a YoCrunch Fruit Parfait Pack HERE.

My store only had the peach and strawberry in the Greek, so that's the flavors we tried. I thought the strawberry was really good, but I didn't mix it well the first time. The second it was much better when I mixed it well. I found the peach a little sour, but my husband like it a lot. We did find that the granola was a little strange in flavor. I can't really describe what was off-putting about it though. I ate the yogurt without the granola and actually preferred it that way.

For a fair comparison, I also got non-Greek YoCrunch to try. I got a strawberry with granola and a vanilla with M&Ms. I think I preferred the Greek to the regular where the strawberry was concerned. The granola did have the strange taste in the regular version too.

I did not like the vanilla with M&Ms at all. It was bitter and my son wouldn't eat it even though there were M&Ms in it (which are his favorite candy).

You can "like" YoCrunch on Facebook and there is a printable coupon for $1 off four cups on their page too!

I received coupons for product for the purpose of a review. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions of my family are our own. Thank you to Pam for including me in this review opportunity. (I have no idea why the white boxes are there...there's nothing on the formatting page...sorry...)

Book Review: Freedom from Performing

Freedom from Performing: Grace in an Applause-Driven World
Freedom from Performing
By Becky Harling
Nav Press, 2011
English, 240 pgs

Description:
Delving into fresh insights from Jesus’ parables, author and speaker Becky Harling directs you to leave behind a life dependent on the accolades of others and go on a grace-filled journey of seeking God’s applause alone.

This study features discussion-provoking questions and exercises for personal or group study.

For years, author Becky Harling lived for the rave reviews of others, until God directed her from performance-driven theatrics to a leading role as a grace-motivated follower of Jesus. She only needed to be herself, and so do you.

Freedom from Performing uncovers fresh perspectives from Jesus’ parables to inspire women of all ages to embrace authentic grace in our accolades-crazed world. Enlivened by the author’s and other women’s transparent, real-life scripts, every chapter is rich with discussion questions and practical exercises for internalizing God’s grace on a daily, personal level. This twelve-week Bible study will play a starring role in your living fully and joyfully as God intends: seeking His applause alone.

Review:
Well, that was a smack in the head! I am the person described in this book. I try so hard to make everyone happy that I forget sometimes that it's not about that. I'm absolutely passing this on the the women's ministry coordinator at our church. I think that every woman MUST read this book. Each chapter has a section at the end with 6 days of questions for use in a Bible study group. That's your hint...don't try to speed through this book. Take it slow and digest what it says. Study it and take the lessons to heart. Grace is such an amazing thing and it's so often over-looked or forgotten in the struggle to "do". We are not perfect beings and we should not strive to be.

I received a copy of the book for the purpose of a review. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review. Opinions are my own.

Product Review and Giveaway: Pocket Purifier (CLOSED)

You know how it goes...you see one of the kids at the park or playgroup sneeze and you're just waiting for yours to start. I'm the same way. I catch everything that everyone around me has.

Oh, and then there's my house. I seriously should own stock in Lysol or Clorox. I use at least 5 of the wipes a day in different rooms of the house. But you know, that's a lot of waste in the trash and it's a lot of chemicals on the surfaces where my kids put their hands and mouths.

Purely Products has introduced a better way to keep your house clean. Among their other great products, they have the Pocket Purifier. The Pocket Purifier sanitizes surfaces and objects with the same UV-C light that sterilizes surgical instruments. Ultraviolet light and nanotechnology eliminate 99.9% of germs that cause colds and flu, plus e-coli, salmonella, mold, fungus and MRSA (staph).

Cellphones, keyboards, doorknobs, toilet handles...all the little places you may not remember to clean and some that you really can't spray chemicals on to make them clean. The Pocket Purifier takes care of all of that.

Some of the great features of the Pocket Purifier are:
  • Powered by 4 (AA) batteries for easy carrying and safe usage (Batteries not included)
  • Convenient, lightweight, quick and easy to use
  • Suitable for disinfecting most everyday items with exposure of 10-15 seconds.
  • Available in convenient single, double and family-friendly four packs
  • UV-C bulb effective for 9,000 hours
  • Built in 4-watt germicidal ultraviolet light deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens destroying their ability to multiply
There is no end to where this can be used...the gym...the house...the day care...the grocery store (ew those cart handles) and anywhere else you put your hands or your kids put their mouths.

You can purchase the Pocket Purifier HERE for $11.99 (With a percentage of every purchase going toward diaperLove™ - a nonprofit providing diapers to children in need) or you can enter to win one right here! The good people at Purely Products have offered one to my readers!

Entry Methods:

All entries MUST have your email in them.

First, and mandatory, entry: Tell me where you are most likely to use the Pocket Purifier. (1 Entry)

        Women of Faith

I'm so excited to be picked as a blogger for the upcoming Over the Top Women of Faith Conference in Dallas! I have wanted to attend a WoF event for years and just haven't been able to find time or money to go.

        Check out this line up:
I'm so excited to hear Lisa Welchel speak. I love her Creative Correction book, and of course, loved her on Facts of Life! Patsy and Marilyn are so funny I can't wait to hear them. I don't really know anything about Brenda Warner but I bet she's going to be great! And Sandi Patty...who doesn't love her?

The music is going to be spectacular:
I loved Mandisa on American Idol and I've been listening to Amy Grant since I was in high school!

        I can't wait. I can't wait. I can't wait!

There are still tickets available HERE and the closer hotel rooms are going fast! To see a list of events to find one in your area, check HERE.

I received two tickets to the event in Dallas from Women of Faith. I will be blogging about the event from now until I get home from it! All opinions will be my own.

              Book Review: Let's Get Real

Let's Get Real: Bringing Authenticity and Wholeness to Your Marriage
Let's Get Real: Bringing Authenticity and Wholeness to Your Marriage
              By Dale and Jena Forehand
              NavPress, 2011
              English, 192 pgs

              Description:
By studying seven essentials based on God's Word and His Son for a fulfilling marriage, you and your spouse will be inspired to make your marriage thrive.

The Let's Get Real workbook outlines the same principles for revitalizing marriage that the Forehands teach at conferences across the country. Through practicing these principles, you’ll become empowered by God’s truth to be more authentic and intimate with one another.

Safety, love, forgiveness, acceptance—things we hope to have in our marriages. But every relationship faces challenges over the years. It's how we deal with those challenges that can cause problems or create growth.

The Let's Get Real workbook looks at marriage as a whole, potential pitfalls, and real ways to make positive changes.

              You’ll discover:
              • The five elements of being a safe mate
              • The two deepest needs of men and women
              • The four qualities of authentic love
              And much more!

Best used with the Let’s Get Real DVD and leader’s guide.

              Review:
The cool thing about this book is that it's a marriage book written by people who have gone through a rough marriage, rough divorce and an amazing reconciliation and re-marriage. They know what they're talking about because they've been through it. Theirs is a very emotional story and they are open and blunt about their troubles.

I like that the chapters have questions in the middle of them. They aren't just at the end or in the back like some books do the study questions. You think about it as soon as you read about it. For that reason, I recommend a couple who is using the book to have one copy for each person. Makes it a little more personal that way.

I think this is great for couples in a rough time, but I also think it's great for a couple who isn't in that spot. It could help keep from getting into that rough time.

              Description:

Forty devotional messages taken from the eternal story of God's Love, the Bible, as revealed in the conversational experience of 66 Love Letters.
Experience a unique conversation with God through a daily devotional reading based on twenty Old Testament and twenty New Testament books of the Bible. Written to help the reader listen to what God is saying in His Word, God's Love Letters to You offers a life-changing encounter with God through the story He is telling. Author Larry Crabb brings the big picture of God's story into clearer focus, helping readers catch an enticing glimpse of how each of these forty books of the Bible advances the story. The goal? To lose our story in His.
              Each day's devotional includes:
              • selected Scripture reading
              • short devotional message
              • reflection questions
              • closing prayer
              Review:
I love the way this book is written and arranged. The lesson each day is short, but deep. Each lesson also has a few questions to help you think about what the lesson is telling you and a prayer to match the lesson.

The only thing that would have made this perfect would have been more space to journal  thoughts as you read each lesson. Some have plenty of room and some have none. A more consistent journaling space wouldn't have added that many pages and would have been nice.

This is something that can be done in about 10 minutes a day, just right for someone who is starting out with a quiet time or for someone who truly doesn't have a lot of time each day.
