Product Review: Jarritos!

I'm a soda junkie. I've been really spoiling myself with the Sodastream, but kinda getting bored with the same flavors. I want a "treat" every once in a while. I was thrilled, therefore, to get to test Jarritos. I've seen them on the shelves and once had a roommate who loved them, but I've never bought them myself. I'm the type that is scared to buy something (or order something) different because I'd feel bad if I wasted money on something I didn't like.

Anyway, my pack of 11 bottles came and I started testing them. I kept it to one a day because they are not sugar free and well, the waist can't handle a lot of sugar.

So, here's what I think about the flavors:

Guava - really good. Has a kind of spice note to it that was really good. My son and husband liked it too. (I love that they call it "a liquid tropical vacation ready to drink")

Lime - made with 100% natural lime flavor, this was our 2nd favorite. It was really crisp and refreshing.

Toronja - tart grapefruit flavor, not unlike a Fresca. Not overpowering with the flavor though.

Tamarind - didn't like it at all. None of us.

Pineapple - this reminded me of my favorite thing in the whole world: a pineapple shaved ice. I think I called it "summer in a bottle"

Mango - not too sweet, very refreshing, my son loved it!

Strawberry - again, not too sweet, tasted very "real"

Jamaica - I cannot figure out what the flavor of this reminds me of. It's sweet and very complex. (Just looked and it's hibiscus flavor.) We didn't finish this one. It wasn't a hit.

Fruit Punch - the kiddo loved it, a little too sweet for me

Mandarin - top flavor in our house. Just like biting into an orange, well if an orange was carbonated.

Lemon/Lime - just like a lemon/lime soda I grew up with.

So, which ones would I purchase again? That's easy...pineapple, mango, mandarin, lime, toronja and strawberry.

One thing that I discovered is that they tasted better if they weren't super cold. They also held their carbonation very well. I left them opened on the counter for one hour and went back to test and they were still just as fizzy! My only complaint was that the bottle top was very hard to get off. I spilled several of them trying to get it removed.

Oh, and please make a sugar free soda...that would be wonderful!

I received a box with 11 bottles from the company for review purposes. No additional compensation has been provided and I was not required to write a positive review.

Book Review: Psalms (Life Change Series)

Psalms (Life Change Series)
By The Navigators
NavPress, 2010
English, 99 pgs.

Product Description:
“Lord, teach us to pray.”

The book of Psalms is an answer to that prayer, leading those who study it into new emotional depth in their prayer and their daily lives.

Your prayers will be enriched and you will acquire a richer revelation of the God who invites you into a lifelong conversation.

• Includes 10 lessons, background information on Psalms, resource recommendations, and a “How to Use This Study" section

My Review:
The study is well organized and superbly written. I love that there is so much by way of application questions and activities and that there are reference notes already in the study. It's intended to be that you only need this book and your Bible to study and that is a big bonus for me. I can easily get "bogged down" with trying to find historical and topical references and information that I forget the spirit of the study. The study is written at a more-than-basic but not seminary-education-required level. I think this will be very useful as I teach my women's Sunday School class in the future. It will be easily adaptable to all the different levels in my class.

A copy of the book was provided to my by NavPress. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review.

Funky Monkey Snacks

How picky can one almost 4-year old boy be? Yeah...well...he's picky! I have a really hard time finding snacks that he'll eat more than once (unless it's a bright orange fish shape) and an even harder time finding things that don't get him "spun up" from the sugar. I'm actually pretty lucky that he likes fruit, black beans and carrots. I was pleased to get the opportunity to review Funky Monkey snacks in hopes that I could broaden his snacking horizons...

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a natural snack that had the great taste and health benefits of fresh fruit, but the crunch and portability of everyday snacks? Now there is! Discover Funky Monkey Snacks - fruit that crunches! Funky Monkey freeze-dries slices and pieces of tropical fruits using a proprietary process to lock in the taste, smell, and nutrients of freshly-picked fruit while adding a fun and satisfying crunch. And every bag of Funky Monkey contains 3 servings of fruit! With nothing added - no added colors, flavors, preservatives, or sugars, Funky Monkey is 100% natural and 100% delicious, as well as gluten-free and certified Kosher. Discover Funky Monkey Snacks - tasty, crunchy, and convenient all-natural snacks with the wholesome goodness of fresh fruit.

Funky Monkey snacks are freeze dried fruits with really fun flavors! Each ounce contains 3 servings of fruit and are all natural! We're talking 100% fruit, no artificial anythings! They are also nut free, which is good for those households where you're dealing with allergies. The fact that they are freeze dried means that they keep all the great nutrients!

We had a great time testing all of them.

The BananaMon (banana with cinnamon) and the AppleMon (apple with cinnamon) while I really enjoyed, my son was iffy about them, but that's because he's not used to a lot of cinnamon (daddy is allergic).
Funky Monkey Snacks Bananamon, Banana with Cinnamon, Freeze-Dried Fruit, 1-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12)
Funky Monkey Snacks Applemon, Apple with Cinnamon, Freeze-Dried Fruit, 1-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12)

The JiveALime (pineapple with lime juice) was so sour and tart! My son wouldn't eat it, so I helped him with the bag!

The PurpleFunk (banana with acai) tasted really good, but the appearance was kinda well, funky.
Funky Monkey Snacks Purple Funk, Banana with Acai, Freeze-Dried Fruit, 1-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12)
PinkPineapple (pineapple with guava) was my favorite! It was so sweet it hurt my teeth, but it was soooooo gooood!
Funky Monkey Snacks Pink Pineapple, 0.42-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12)
I can't give an opinion on the MangOJ because my husband and son ate it so fast I didn't get a taste. I'm assuming it's really yummy.
Funky Monkey Snacks MangOJ, Mango with Orange Juice, Freeze-Dried Fruit, 1-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12)
The Carnaval Mix (mixture of banana, apple, pineapple and papaya) was eaten in the car and again, I didn't get a taste.
Funky Monkey Snacks Carnaval Mix, 0.42-Ounce Bags (Pack of 12)
So, all in all, these were a huge hit at my house.  I've never noticed them in the stores but they're available for order from Amazon.

Disclaimer: I received a box of sample bags of the snacks for review purposes. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review. Thank you to Stacy at Funky Monkey for giving me the opportunity to taste your products!

Book Review and Giveaway: Dracula in Love (CLOSED)

Dracula in Love
Dracula in Love
By Karen Essex
Doubleday, 2010
English, 384 pgs

Book Description:
Bram Stoker's Dracula re-told from the point of view of Mina Murray Harker. Does contain graphic scenes. Not for young readers.

My Review:
I am a passive fan of the Dracula/vampire genre. Yes, I read (and re-read a few times) the Twilight sage and have have read some Anne Rice. To be honest though, it was kinda getting old. I mean really, why is our culture so interested in a creature who wants to kill? So, why did I request this book to review? Well, I wanted to see if there was a new way to look at the genre and see if I could get re-interested in fiction.

So, um, yeah...I loved it. I had a hard time putting it down, in fact. The story is not a new one, but is from a new point of view and feels fresh. I love the character development and in some places you can really feel Mina's struggle and pain. I'm interested in the author's other works since this is a really good piece of storytelling!

Thanks to Judy at Doubleday, I have 2 copies to give away to my readers.

Book Review: Captured by Grace

Captured By Grace: No One is Beyond the Reach of a Loving God
Captured By Grace: No One is Beyond the Reach of a Loving God
By Dr. David Jeremiah
Thomas Nelson, 2010
English, 240 pgs.

Book Description:

Timely and encouraging words to initiate a fresh experience of God's grace.

By following the dramatic story of John Newton, the Amazing Grace hymn writer, and the apostle Paul's own encounter with the God of grace, pastor and teacher Dr. David Jeremiah helps readers understand the freeing power of permanent forgiveness and mercy.
Dramatic stories and biblical insights highlight the very personal effects of grace and how grace:
  • wondrously spans all our differences
  • rescues us from our lostness
  • helps us overcome our weaknesses,
  • takes us from victims to victors
My Review:
I have been fascinated by the concept of grace for the past few months. I have really been searching out not only what it means to receive grace but how we're to live once we receive that grace. I wish I'd found this book earlier in that search. This book is very easy to read and plainly explains, both with Bible verses and personal experiences (from John Newton), what God's grace means in our salvation experience. I love the illustrations from the Parable of the Prodigal Son and the illustration of the gifts for the traveler in particular. Yet another book which is going to be shared...

I received a copy of the book from Book Sneeze. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review.
