True Confessions: How Thrifty am I?

This is part of a conversation started by Coupon Teacher:

1.  Do you use coupons to save over 50% or more on your groceries?  I have trouble getting to 50% because of formula and Pull-Ups, but I get close!

2. Do you reuse paper products like foil, plastic baggies, or plastic utensils?  I do not, but I do save ketchup packets from fast food meals.

3. Do you buy things like clothes, home goods, or entertainment items for full price? I try not to, but as fast as these kiddos are growing and as fast as I'm losing the baby weight, it's really hard!.

4. Do you eat out more than once a week?  We do. I'm too tired sometimes and the kiddos don't cooperate sometimes. I consider it a sanity saver.

5. Do you feel an obligation to take free samples or toiletries in hotels? I don't stay in hotels if I can help it. But when I do, I load up!

6. Do you send in more than one mail-in rebate a month? I forget about rebates. I'm working on a system to remember though.

7. Do you feel an obligation or need to stop at every yard sale you pass? I do not, but I do break my neck looking...

8. Do you recycle items on Freecycle or for money? I used to, but I got upset with my local group members asking for things like theme par tickets and money and all-out rudeness if they didn't get the item I posted. I try to find people who need things and help that way.

9. Have you lowered all your bills to the smallest amount you can pay for acceptable services? I'm working on it. There's something in this house sucking electricity though.

10.  Have you figured out the best way to save money is to spend less and stretch all you have as far as you can? Working on that too. I'm learning I don't have to work so hard.

I love my postal guy and UPS guy!

As I was typing that last post, UPS brought me two boxes...can't wait to open them!

2 month check up

Okay, I told you before that I was saving all my survey money which comes in cash for birthdays and Christmas. So, how am I doing? So far this year I have $40 in cash, a $10 CVS card, a $10 Wal Mart Card and a $20 Target card in the Christmas fund. I also have two $10 Chili's cards, which will be used as gifts for someone... Oh, and I cashed out recently (and am just waiting for the checks) two at $10 and one at $26 and another at $44!

I also told you that I'm saving my Amazon credits for this stroller. Graco Vie4 Stroller, Betsey(Well, the blue and brown version, not the pink one...) So, that's going well too. I'm just under $64 saved up towards it! And I have a $10 credit which I'm waiting for the code to come in!

So, how am I doing all this???

Synovate/Global Opinion Panels

Mindfield
Daily Survey Panel
InBox Dollars (banner on right hand side)

And to be perfectly honest, I've really backed off the surveys the past few weeks. I should have more saved up!

Super Diaper Stock-Up Deal

Seventh Generation Chlorine Free Baby Diapers, Stage 2 (12-18 Lbs.), Case of 160 Diapers [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]
Amazon has the Seventh Generation diapers on sale right now! They're priced at $39.99, but you can save an additional 15% with subscribe and save (which you can cancel anytime...), which makes a pack of 160 size 2 diapers $33.99 or $0.21 each! This is a pretty good price for an "environmentally friendlier" diaper which happens to work really well! You also get free shipping!

Pampers Swaddlers, Size 2, Economy Plus Pack, 184 Swaddlers
Another GREAT deal is on Pampers Swaddlers (I check size 2 prices since I have enough 1s for a few months...thanks to great diaper showers!) Size 2. The pack of 184 is on sale for $40.49, but with the Subscribe and Save the price is $34.42, or $0.19 each!!!

Huggies Snug & Dry High Count Diapers, Size 1/2, 228 Diapers
The best deal I'm seeing on Huggies is for the Snug and Dry, Size 1-2. They're on sale for $39.99 for a box of 228, but with the Subscribe and Save, you get the box for $33.99, or $0.15 each diaper! If I weren't saving up my Amazon credit for a stroller, I'd be getting these!

Shushybye Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

Ever since our second child was born in December, our 3 year old has been battling us at bedtime. Every night, he gets out of bed and we have to put him back for about an hour until he finally settles. A few weeks ago, he started pulling the sheet off the bed. Then he added piling all his stuffed animals, slippers and the occasional book on the bed. This past week, he added taking off his jammies and diaper!

I received a copy of Shushybye Sleepover Surprise book with CD and the Close Your Eyes CD by the Shushybye Dream Band to review. I can’t tell you how ready I am for this to work!!!!!

Product Info: The wondrous world of Shushybye is capturing the hearts and imaginations of toddlers, preschoolers and adults alike!  Shushybye is the original dream-themed entertainment brand for preschoolers, encompassing a national television series on Baby First TV and Comcast VOD, a series of bedtime storybooks from St. Martin’s Press, music CDs from E1 Entertainment, toys and plush dolls, DVDs from PBS Video and sleep wear.

Established in 2004, The Shushybye Company developed and launched Shushybye to inspire children to look forward to sleep time during the day, and to help parents prepare their preschoolers for sleep at night.

It is in Shushybye where dreams are made for children by the Shushies. Children give the Shushies their dream wishes and they are delivered to them by the Shushybye Train as they fall asleep. After making the dreams, the Shushies gather in Pillow Park to dance to the music of the Shushybye Dream Band.

For more information, the Shushies invite you to visit Shushybye to meet the characters and learn more about products available.

Mom’s Initial impression: I put in the Shushybye Sleepover Surprise CD while my son was gone so I could hear it without him interrupting. The story is cute, but at 14 minutes long (with songs), it may be a little long. The narrator and character voices are soothing and the song tracks are great! The blues song is going to be used to get that last burst of pre-bedtime energy out! The lullaby is sweet and should help my kiddo drift off easily! The characters ae really cute too!

My only concern is that the CD showed up as one track. I won’t be able to just play the songs if I want to read the story to him. I’m also a little concerned about the train sound which signals you to turn the page. For my train-obsessed 3 year old, that would distract him!

The Close Your Eyes CD has 11 tracks for a total of 22 and a half minutes of play time. The first two songs are “poppy” and are very catchy! The third is jazzy/big bandy and sounds like Jailhouse Rock meets Rockin’ Robin. The rest of the tracks are just as good. There are several genres and all are well played! I think my son is going to enjoy this as well! I’m visualizing the Wiggles or the Imagination Movers as I listen. It’s on their level!

1st night reactions: My son was as keyed up as usual. We put the Shushybye Sleepover Surprise CD in to play and sat down to listen and read together. It held his attention for the entire time! By the end of the book, he knew the characters and asked me to play it again. He clapped when the characters in the book clapped and he made his happy-big-smile face when the characters were happy at the end. He said the music was “cool” and that he liked the songs. As soon as I explained the Dream Train to him, he was ready to brush his teeth and go to bed! That is usually a fight! We went into his room and he asked me to tell him the story again. He was very excited about the Dream Train (of course, he’s obsessed with trains...) coming to see him. He had his eyes closed and was quiet, and staying in bed. Oh, he thought the glow in the dark cover was pretty cool too! I had to prop it up on the dresser so he could see the stars!

An hour later, he’s sound asleep, still fully dressed, sheets on the bed, no extra stuffed animals!

I’d say the first night was a success!

2nd night reactions: This morning, he was still talking about the book and wanted to listen to the Close Your Eyes CD all day! He already knows most of the words to the first track, which he has played all day!

I’m hoping tonight will go as well as last night. Nap time today was the same as bedtime has been: getting out of bed, pulling off sheet/blanket and all his clothes. Plus, he’s keyed up since he’s been indoors all day.

Well, tonight wasn’t as smooth. It didn’t hold his attention as well. I tried playing the Shushybye Sleepover Surprise CD in his radio in his room and it wouldn’t read the disk. (Last night we used the computer to play it, went back to it tonight.) He got up twice and I caught him just before he removed his diaper. It’s an hour after starting bedtime and he’s still wide awake. And it sounds like the sheets are being pulled off right now...

3rd night reactions:
This morning, he told me the Dream Train woke him up! He’s still listening to the Close Your Eyes CD! He’s singing along and flying his airplanes (which is his highest compliment to a song) as he spins! We’re going to try skipping his nap today to see if maybe he’s just not tired at bedtime.

My husband did the routine with him tonight and it was smoother than last night. He only got up once. He had fun telling Daddy all about the Shushies! He did pull the sheet off and get up once, but he went down much easier tonight.

4th night reactions: He picked up the book on his own and requested we read it. My husband did the book without the CD just for a change. I think not having the upbeat music helped. He's sound asleep and the jammies and sheets are in place! We did listen to the Close Your Eyes CD all day again.

Buy It: You can purchase Shushybye Sleepover Surprise book with CD from Shushybye HERE.

Polaner Coupon

Go here to find a $1 off 1 jar Polaner Sugar Free with Fiber Preservatives & Jellies. I was able to print it twice.

Just Sayin'

I'm mad at myself for not getting paper yesterday. I only wanted one since the coupons weren't super spectacular. Usually we stop on the way to church, but I knew I'd be going to Wal Mart in the afternoon, so I told my husband not to worry about it. Guess what, WM was sold out. So I stopped on the way home at the convenience store and they were sold out too. Guess I learned that lesson. I don't even have the CVS and Wags sale papers! Luckily my father-in-law always saves his coupons for me! Hope I can get them from him soon!

Monday Menu Plan

It's been a few weeks since I've been organized enough to do this!

Monday - Pastor Appreciation Banquet

Tuesday - Possibly fast food if we get a chance to run to the next town for Kroger (30 miles away!), if not we'll have chicken and black bean tacos

Wednesday - Baked Chicken and Rice

Thursday - Chicken, Betty Crocker potatoes, steamed veggies

Friday - Stouffer's Lasagna, steamed veggies, salad and garlic bread

Saturday - Probably leftovers

Sunday - Nachos!

Book Review: Beautiful Things Happen When a Woman Trusts God

Trust. A simple concept, yet hard to master. What does it look like to truly trust? Do you trust God to control the circumstances of your life? Do you trust Him to direct your path. It’s easy to give the “church answer”, yes, but what does it look like in reality?

In this book, Sheila Walsh tackles the difficult, yet gloriously important, topic of trust. Through personal stories and Biblical characters the concept of trust is studied from several different angles. Quiet trust, brokenness, boldly following.

This book meant a lot to me. I cried as I saw myself in the pages. I realized my short comings with trust and have begun to work toward building the trust I desire.

The copy I read had a study guide in the back. Make sure you get this version. As I was first reading, I didn’t flip back to the questions after each chapter and I was feeling that the book was mostly biographical and not topical enough. After studying the questions which go with each chapter, it was much more personal to me and my situations.

I am a member of Book Sneeze’s Blogger program. I received no monetary compensation for my opinions. A copy of the book was provided for me to read, in exchange for my honest opinions of the book. Go here to learn more about the program: http://booksneeze.com/#frombrb

It's a searchable database of blogs - frugal Mom type blogs only! You can search by store and state so you can find blogs that cover the stores you need.

Of course the site is still new and currently there are about 60 blogs listed but that should grow pretty quick as new ones are being added all the time!

Check it out...you'll find yours truly on it! There is a button on my right hand bar if you want to go see what it's all about!

Book Review - Your Life in Christ

As someone with a degree in Religious Education, I was really excited about the opportunity to review the first book of the Design for Discipleship series from NavPress. I'm always looking for studies to recommend either to others for personal study or for Sunday School classes. I was a bit shocked when I received books 1,3 and 5 to review.

The study is divided into 4 or 5 weeks worth of lessons per book. I took a little time and read through the questions for each week and was very happy with what I read.

The study is a bit on the basic side, but it's in-depth for basics. It's not too complicated for a new believer and it's not too basic for even someone who has studied the Word for years. It would be great for use in a Sunday School setting.

The study is a bit long for each week, but if it's taken a few questions per day, it would not be too overwhelming, even for a new Christian.

I like that each lesson has a space for journaling during the week and several have charts to match the lesson.

I will be recommending this as a church wide study and look forward to completing the study both by myself and in a group.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commision's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

I know it's been slow around here this week. We're trying to get the baby to sleep on his own (as in, not on me) and it's taking it's toll on my nerves! I'm working up a great Kroger trip to take advantage of the MEGA sale this weekend...I'll keep you posted.
